Phase one: western USA [late-July to mid-October 2007]
In the first phase of Knots Tied In Strings, James and Jonathan travelled around the western United States of America, arriving in San Francisco, California.
Together they stayed in the states of Montana, Washington, Oregon and a lot of California. For an additional three weeks Jonathan headed south-east to Arizona and Texas while James stayed on in California. They met up again in Toronto on October 16.

Phase two: Toronto and the east [mid-October 2007 to February 2008]
The second phase of Knots Tied In Strings recounted James and Jonathan living and working in Toronto, Canada.
Whilst based in Toronto they both also travelled around south-eastern Canada and Jonathan hit up the north-eastern United States of America. States and provinces visited included Quebec, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont. Others got missed.
